Lions Bay is beloved by locals. Why? Due to its superior location. The small community is just 30 minutes from downtown Vancouver and 8 minutes from Horseshoe Bay, making it easy to take the ferry to Vancouver Island or other parts of the province. Even better, for those who love hiking and skiing, Squamish is just half an hour to the north and Whistler another half hour past that. This makes Lions Bay a quiet yet accessible oasis - a rarity within the Metro Vancouver Area.
As a very small community, Lions Bay is home to just one public school, Lions Bay Community School, a K-3 elementary school that is part of British Columbia School District No. 45. However, the area is well served by the many schools located in West Vancouver. Plus, since Lions Bay is 30 minutes or less by car from Vancouver, residents of the area have access to the many post-secondary schools that the province’s largest city has to offer. These include the world-renowned University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, Capilano University, Vancouver Film School, the Art Institute of Vancouver, and the Emily Carr University of Art + Design.
As an extremely small community of just over 1,300 residents, Lions Bay is not divided into distinct neighbourhoods.
Lions Bay is served by Metro Vancouver’s TransLink public transportation system. Specifically, it is the 262 bus route that makes an hourly trip to Lions Bay. Plus, Lions Bay is located just eight minutes from Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal, served by BC Ferries, which can take residents everywhere from Nanaimo to the Sunshine Coast, and more. Of course, Lions Bay is located on the Sea-to-Sky Highway which is not only known for being one of the most picturesque in the province but also connects the Metro Vancouver Area with Squamish, Whistler, Pemberton, and beyond. Meanwhile, in nearby Vancouver, Lions Bay locals gain access to Vancouver International Airport, a Via Rail train stop, and the city’s local SkyTrain system. The SkyTrain system can take you within downtown Vancouver or further outside of the city, such as to Surrey and Richmond (where the airport can be found). Lastly, when it comes to healthcare, Lions Bay residents can take advantage of some of the top hospitals in Vancouver, including Lions Gate Hospital, Richmond Hospital, Mount Saint Joseph Hospital, St. Paul’s Hospital, and Vancouver General Hospital. To the north, Squamish General Hospital is also accessible.
Always call 9-1-1 in cases of emergency. Meanwhile, other emergency service organizations that serve the area include the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Lions Bay Fire Rescue, and BC Ambulance Service. That said, Lions Bay is considered to be extremely safe, featuring minimal crime and a low risk of natural disasters.
Due to the fact that Lions Bay is such a small residential community and boasts such a prime coastal location, you can bet that properties are in demand here. In fact, a residential property assessment conducted in 2017 revealed that the average property assessment in Lions Bay is among the highest in the province. If you are lucky enough to find a home here, you can expect it to come with a high price tag. The majority of properties in Lions Bay are single-family homes, ranging from bungalows to multi-storey houses.
As you probably suspect by now, Lions Bay is known for its superior standard of living. Giving residents access to beaches, hiking trails, ski hills, and more, if you love the great outdoors, then Lions Bay is the place for you. But beyond its natural beauty, the area also offers residents quality educational and healthcare opportunities and excellent infrastructure. Plus, as part of the Metro Vancouver Area, Lions Bay shares in Vancouver’s ranking as the fifth most liveable city in the entire world. That is what The Global Liveability Index’s 2023 Liveability Report ranked it, assessing categories like stability, healthcare, culture & environment, and education.
As previously mentioned, Lions Bay is located on Howe Sound, but did you know that Howe Sound is a fjord? In fact, it is the southernmost fjord in the Northern Hemisphere. Even more, the name Lions Bay comes from the two peaks that are visible throughout the Lower Mainland and the community. These peaks are known as “the lions.” They are also referred to as Ch'ich'iyuy Elxwikn, or the two sisters, by the indigenous Coast Salish people. Thus, there are no lions living in Lions Bay.
