Why live in Grande Prairie?

Why live in Grande Prairie? Let’s start with its scenic beauty. This northwestern Alberta city is situated on the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, surrounded by farmland and lush forests. So if you're an outdoor lover, you’ll be in paradise here. The city is also surrounded by picturesque lakes, such as Bear Lake, Crystal Lake, and Clairmont Lake, and is home to several urban parks, including Evergreen Park and Muskoseepi Park, which was recently renovated and now features a games area, waterslide, children’s pool, and beach. It is worth noting that Grande Prairie hosted the Canada Games in 1995 and the Arctic Winter Games in 2010, which led to the development of several sports facilities still in use today. These facilities coupled with the area’s natural landscape allow residents to stay active year-round, whether they prefer to downhill ski (Nitehawk is the closest alpine ski hill to Grande Prairie), snowshoe, skate, cross-country ski, luge, hike, camp, fish, swim, paddle, or snowmobile. There are also several 18-hole golf courses in the area, like The Dunes Golf and Winter Club, the Bear Creek Golf Club, the Grande Prairie Golf and Country Club, and Grovedale Golf Course. Although slightly farther away, if you enjoy spending time in nature, many Grande Prairie residents take the time to drive to Kakwa Provincial Park, Willmore Wilderness Park, Mount Robson Provincial Park, and Jasper National Park, which range from three hours to four and a half hours by car. Beyond the abundance of recreational opportunities that living in Grande Prairie comes with, another reason people choose to live here is the economy. Grande Prairie’s economy is largely centred on four main industries: retail, agriculture (there’s even an annual festival held around this industry - the Grande Prairie Stompede), oil and gas, and forestry. Several of these industries are particularly lucrative, which contributes to Grande Prairie’s reputation as a high-income city. Given the dominant industries, a few of the top employers in the region are Procter & Gamble, International Paper, Canfor, and Norbord. More reasons to call Grande Prairie home are that it has excellent healthcare facilities and schools, which will be covered more below, as well as a variety of housing options, from condos and duplexes to townhomes and single-family homes.

Quality and diversity of education in Grande Prairie

Education in Grande Prairie is high quality. The four main school districts that operate here are The Grande Prairie Public School District (GPPSD), Grande Prairie Roman Catholic Separate School District No. 28, The Peace Wapiti School Division No. 76 (PWSD), and The Northwest Francophone Education Region No. 1. The GPPSD is the largest school division in the region, operating a total of 18 schools. The second largest is the Grande Prairie Roman Catholic Separate School District, which runs 10 schools. Given the many districts in operation here, students will have the option of receiving secular or religious education, as well as French or English-language education. The largest public schools in the city are Grande Prairie Composite High School, Charles Spencer High School, St. Joseph Catholic High School, while a few of the main private schools are Hillcrest Christian School, Parkside Montessori, and Grande Prairie Christian School. There is one post-secondary school in Grande Prairie and that is Northwestern Polytechnic, formerly known as Grande Prairie Regional College. For access to other colleges and universities, you will need to travel to a larger city in Alberta, such as Edmonton, which is roughly four and a half hours away by car. The University of Alberta, the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, MacEwan University, the University of Lethbridge - Edmonton Campus, Concordia University of Edmonton, The King’s University, Athabasca University - Edmonton, and CDI College can all be found in Edmonton.

For buses to Edmonton, there is only one coach bus service that operates in the city and it is Cold Shot Bus Service. Most residents prefer to get around by car, with the main highway being Highway AB-43, which connects locals with Edmonton to the east or British Columbia to the west. Highway AB-2 and Highway AB-40 also run near Grande Prairie. Once in Edmonton or Calgary, there are several airlines that offer flights across Canada, to the United States, and internationally. Finally, in terms of healthcare, Grande Prairie is home to not one but two hospitals, Grande Prairie Regional Hospital and the QEII Hospital. This is in addition to the many clinics in the area, such as the Grande Banks Medical Clinic and Health Hub Medical Clinic.
