From the natural beauty of the Great Lakes to the province’s top-notch healthcare and education systems, there are so many reasons to call Ontario home.
Ontario has a reputation for having one of the best public education systems in the world. In fact, Ontario students consistently rank high in reading, math, and science. Beyond the many highly-rated public schools in the province, there is also an extensive network of private and religious education options. Ontario is also known as a destination for post-secondary institutions. Home to 24 colleges and 23 universities, including the internationally ranked University of Toronto, there is no shortage of post-secondary options here. Other top-ranking Ontario universities include the University of Waterloo, Queen’s University, McMaster University, the University of Ottawa, and Western University.
As of 2023, the most populous cities in Ontario are as follows: Toronto, Ottawa, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, London, Markham, Vaughan, Kitchener, and Windsor.
Ontario’s infrastructure is world-renowned. The province is home to 48 airports, including Canada’s largest airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport. It also has an extensive rail network through Via Rail that serves cities and towns along the province’s populous southern shores, all the way from Windsor to Cornwall. Further, Ontario’s public healthcare system is second to none. The province’s capital city of Toronto contains the country’s top three hospitals alone - Toronto General - University Health Network, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, and Mount Sinai Hospital. And Ontario’s infrastructure is only going to get better from here. The Government of Ontario recently announced that they are investing over $184 billion in infrastructure projects across the province, with the aim of improving everything from broadband internet access to childcare and healthcare services.
Ontario has a plethora of emergency services to ensure the safety and security of its residents at all times. In an emergency situation, always call 9-1-1. To combat elder abuse, Ontario also has a 24/7 Seniors Safety Line and an Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario (EAPO) task force made up of Regional Elder Abuse Consultants. Further, Ontario has a low crime rate, second only to the province of Quebec. In fact, several Ontario cities rank among the lowest for crime in the country, including Oakville, Markham, Richmond Hill, Ottawa, Waterloo, and Burlington.
The Province of Ontario has one of the strongest property markets in all of Canada. Demand continues to rise, along with housing prices, making real estate a prized investment in the province. Ontario’s major housing markets have continued to thrive in 2023, especially Toronto and Ottawa. Meanwhile, buyers have access to a wide range of property types in Ontario, including bungalows, detached homes, semi-detached homes, townhouses, condos, and multi-storey homes. There are also many great options for rental properties and summer homes across the province.
Standard of living in Ontario is among the highest in the world. In fact, Toronto recently received one of the highest scores on The Global Liveability Index 2023’s Liveability Report. The city ranked ninth globally for standard of living, with near-perfect scores in stability, healthcare, culture & environment, and education. Overall, thanks to relatively low crime rates, a friendly population, and subsidized healthcare and education systems, many Ontario residents enjoy a superior standard of living.
The word “Ontario” is derived from the Iroquois word “kanadario,” which translates to “sparkling water” or “beautiful water.” Why was it given this name? Ontario has more than 250,000 lakes, including five Great Lakes. Roughly one-fifth of the province is water. Ontario is also where you will find the most southerly point of Canada - Pelee Island, which is in the middle of Lake Erie.
