North Aldershot, Burlington Neighbourhood Guide: Enjoy It at Your Own Pace

North Aldershot is a recognized area that has had limited development over the years due to the locals trying to keep it that way. That means it’s quiet with a lot of green space — while many shops and restaurants are in nearby Aldershot.

Enjoy the parks and nature preserve in the area, which allows for a brisk solo hike (or with the family). The nearby playgrounds are also ideal for the younger ones.

Aldershot, Burlington, got its name from an early European settler in the area, William Applegarth, who apparently named Aldershot after his original English home. North Aldershot has long enjoyed an abundance of green space along with several nearby amenities that the locals enjoy.

North Aldershot has been identified as a distinct area since the 1970s. More recently, the land use in this community has come under review to consider future land use for eventual expansion. However, development may continue to be limited due to the sensitive natural areas in the vicinity.

Most of the homes in the North Aldershot neighbourhood are single-family, detached dwellings with three or more bedrooms, many of them constructed before the 1960s.

However, while there are some older structures adding to the charm of the area, there have been some newer construction in the 1990s, including townhouses.

While North Aldershot is a relatively sparsely populated area, there are still some opportunities to take in the culture.

One of the nearby arts centres is The Aldershot Players, a performing arts group and dinner theatre on Plains Road West. Not too far from the community is The Burlington Performing Arts Centre on Locust Street. It is a popular hub for live music and other live entertainment.

There are a few shopping destinations in the North Aldershot neighbourhood. The White Oak Plaza on Plains Road East is close by in Aldershot Village and offers a variety of retailers including a framing studio and a spa.

You’ll find other smaller shops in the area such as Basketful Boutique on Plains Road West, which offers home decor and clothing. There’s also A Renaissance Woman, a consignment boutique.

If bigger stores are your thing, then you don’t have far to travel to get to SmartCentres Burlington North on Dundas Street, complete with a Walmart. If you want to go even bigger, the Mapleview Shopping Centre is also less than a 10-minute journey from North Aldershot.

Those who enjoy it when someone else makes their food are in luck. You’ll find family-friendly spots nearby like Sunset Grill on Fairview Street.

However, there is no shortage of other dining destinations within a short commute such as Rose Garden Family Restaurant on Plains Road West. If you want more of an international flavour, try Sakis Greek Restaurant on Plains Road East, as well as MoMo Sushi along the same route.

Looking for a little outdoor play? You can try Aldershot Park off Gallagher Road, a sprawling open space with a playground and other amenities. It also has its own parking for convenience.

Another option is Teal Greenway Park off Teal Drive, a smaller area but still equipped with a playground for the kids to enjoy.

Aldershot Park offers two baseball diamonds to enjoy during the warmer seasons. There’s also the nearby Aldershot Pool, as well as the LaSalle wading pool and splash pad in nearby La Salle.

The Eileen and John Holland Nature Sanctuary is a 15-hectare protected area that allows for trail hikes. It also has natural features to enjoy such as a forest and creek.

The North Aldershot neighbourhood has some other unique opportunities for fun. One of them is the Next Door social space, which offers a number of activities ranging from ball hockey to women’s coffee hour.

If you’re driving to downtown Toronto, then expect about an hour along Highway 403 and the QEW. There’s also the option of taking the toll road Highway 407, shaving 10 minutes off your commute.

Those that prefer to use transit to get to the big city can get to Toronto’s Union Station in about an hour from the nearby Aldershot GO Station. Other transit routes will take about 1.5 hours.

The large nature preserve in the neighbourhood is ideal for a nice hike along a trail, taking in the natural surroundings. However, there are other nearby wide-open spaces to stretch your legs.

If you’re looking for a unique shopping experience, you can hit up nearby Aldershot Village with a wide variety of retail options and wellness centres. There are also big box stores and a mall if you prefer.
