“Anytime we welcome people into our home, it’s a celebration. I love hosting family and friends and this space is the first exchange of hugs, laughter and energy. It’s a good feeling.”

What and where is your favourite room?
The room I love the most is our foyer. We are in the midst of re-doing our century home and this is one of the few spaces that feels complete!
Dallas’s century home in Uxbridge uses a mix of old and new to create a welcoming entranceway.
What was the inspiration behind creating the room?
I wanted something dramatic, classic and a little fun!

What were the challenges in creating the room and how did you overcome them?
We didn’t have too many challenges — the 136-year-old bones of the home were still solid. We had the floors sanded down to a natural finish, which was time- and labour-intensive, but then it was just paint and decor! The white door to the left of the bench doesn’t open. I suppose at one time it did, but it’s been drywalled on the opposite side and painted shut. I still love the architectural interest it adds to the space.
The white door adds visual interest next to the black walls adorned with antique art.
What are your favourite features of the room?
Hands down, the black wall! We painted out the trim and the door as well to really create a seamless look. It’s home to some antique art unearthed from our parents’ basement (score!) I also love the original door and light fixture — all elements we were determined to keep during the renovation.

How does this room make you feel?
It reminds me not to take things too seriously — life is too short! Paint the wall and when you get bored of it, just paint it again!

Describe a favourite moment in this room.

The foyer floors were sanded down to a natural finish. The light fixture and front door are both original.
