Whychwood Park is a truly tiny private community located in central Toronto. Less than 10 minutes north of downtown, Whychwood Park is a gated community nestled next to Casa Loma, or west of Bathurst Street, east of Christie Street, north of Davenport Road, and south of Alcina Avenue, to be specific. The area first came into being in the late nineteenth century, which means it is full of period homes - sixty of them to be exact, all of which can be found on the Toronto Historical Board’s Inventory of Heritage Properties. Most of the homes in this area date back to the late nineteenth century, though some were built as recently as the 1950s. Since Eden Smith, an architect known for English Cottage-style buildings, was responsible for the construction of many Whychwood Park homes, you will find many homes of this style here. Further, Whychwood Park is situated along a private ravine on Davenport Ridge, making the homes even more exclusive. In fact, the neighbourhood has its very own executive council that oversees the area’s goings-on, including the maintenance of its private roads and parks. For this privilege, residents must pay a special Whychwood Park tax. Other parks that residents get to enjoy include Whychwood Barns Park, Hillcrest Park, and The Tollkeeper’s Park, complete with its own museum. Nordheimer Ravine and Sir Winston Churchill Park are also nearby, located in the Casa Loma neighbourhood. Speaking of Casa Loma, Whychwood Park is only a stone’s throw away from the beloved Gothic Revival-style castle that Toronto is famous for. Residents can also enjoy all the boutique shops, fitness studios, and fine dining bars and restaurants that St. Clair Avenue West and Bathurst Street have to offer. Overall, if you’re looking to live a private, quiet life in one of Toronto’s most exclusive neighbourhood yet still want access to city amenities, Whychwood Park might be worth checking out.
