The real question is, why not live in Vancouver? As one of the most popular cities in the whole world, Vancouver has so much going for it. A top-notch food scene, breathtaking natural scenery, including an oceanfront location, plenty of housing options, and quality education and healthcare at every turn.
The Vancouver School Board is responsible for operating 119 schools across the city, as well as the University Endowment Lands. This makes them the largest school in the province. In Vancouver, students will enjoy a range of options, whether you’re talking about elementary school, high school, and even post-secondary. There are Catholic schools, public schools, French immersion schools, private schools, and boarding schools in the city. In addition, Vancouver and its surrounding areas are home to tons of post-secondary options, like the globally-recognized University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, Capilano University, Vancouver Film School, the Art Institute of Vancouver, and the Emily Carr University of Art + Design.
The most populous neighbourhoods in Vancouver are Downtown Vancouver, Renfrew-Collingwood, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, West End, Kitsilano, Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise, Sunset, Victoria-Fraserview, Killarney, and Grandview-Woodland.
Vancouver’s infrastructure is second to none. It features a state-of-the-art public transportation system, as well as the province’s largest international airport, Vancouver International Airport. Other nearby airports include Abbotsford International Airport, Langley Regional Airport, Boundary Bay Airport, and Pitt Meadows Regional Airport. Vancouver also has one of only four Via Rail train stops in the province, connecting Vancouver with the rest of Canada by train. TransLink operates transit throughout Metro Vancouver, which includes the SkyTrain system. The SkyTrain system conveniently transports locals from the downtown core to the outskirts of the city, including Surrey and Richmond (where the airport is located). Meanwhile, Vancouver residents can take advantage of many of the province’s top hospitals, which are found here - namely Richmond Hospital, Mount Saint Joseph Hospital, St. Paul’s Hospital, and Vancouver General Hospital.
Calling 9-1-1 is available to all Vancouver residents in cases of emergency. The local police service, the Vancouver Police Department, can also be contacted. Though generally speaking, Vancouver is considered very safe. It has a low crime rate and is at low risk of natural disasters.
There’s no denying that Vancouver’s property market is extremely hot and has been for some time. This means that if you can afford to buy a home here, you can bet it will be a worthwhile investment. The rise in demand for real estate in the city has spurred all kinds of new developments, giving buyers even more options. Whether you’re looking to live right downtown or in one of the city’s more residential neighbourhoods like Dunbar or Kitsilano, you will find a range of property types. These include bungalows, semi-detached homes, detached homes, duplexes, triplexes, condominiums, and apartments.
The standard of living in Vancouver is nearly unrivalled. Just look at The Global Liveability Index 2023’s Liveability Report, which ranked Vancouver as the fifth most liveable city in the entire world. This was the highest ranking received by any city in Canada and it assessed a wide range of categories, including stability, healthcare, culture & environment, and education. As you can see, it’s not just our Canadian bias that makes us think that Vancouver is a wonderful place to live - it objectively is.
Vancouver has garnered the nickname “Hollywood North,” due to its thriving film and television industry. The city is now considered to contain one of the largest film and television production centres in North America. It is believed to contain over 50 animation studios alone, with the entire industry responsible for employing upwards of 100,000 people. Some of the top films and movies in the past 50 years have been shot in and around Vancouver, including Watchmen, Deadpool, Juno, Elf, and more.
