Northwest Sandalwood Parkway, Brampton Neighbourhood Guide: An Emerging Contemporary Community

Northwest Sandalwood Parkway is a growing community around Mayfield Road and Hurontario Street, with new home developments continuing to be built. The surrounding neighbourhoods offer accessible shopping and dining amenities. Diverse cuisine can be found near this neighbourhood, spurred by the multi-ethnic community. Several natural areas and young trees define the area, which is an increasingly popular community for young families.

Centuries before European settlers arrived here, Brampton was the ancestral land of Indigenous Peoples. In the 1600s, European settlers arrived in the region and the chief of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation surrendered the area to the British Crown. Following this invasion, Brampton was named after the town of Brampton in Cumberland, England. 

By 1853, Brampton had evolved significantly enough to be incorporated as a village and later as a town in 1873. It wasn’t until 1974 that Brampton became a city. Over the years, immigration in the area has increased from 10,000 a year in the 1950s to over 600,000 new Canadians today. 

Today, Brampton is one of the fastest-growing and most diverse cities in Canada. 

The picturesque streets of Northwest Sandalwood Parkway feature newer subdivisions on tree-lined streets. The dense pockets of detached homes come in a variety of styles ranging from bungalows to spacious homes with 4+ bedrooms. 

Additionally, you’ll also find townhouse developments and semi-detached homes. This area continues to undergo urbanization with ongoing new home developments.

Parkside Heights is a new community of townhome and single-family home developments. This project is in the pre-construction phase, offering an executive community with custom luxury homes.

Several other new home developments are shaping this community, including Mayfield Village and Ellis Lane, among others. Home developers are drawn to the surrounding established community and close proximity to highways.

Besides residential developments, this neighbourhood is also zoned for mixed-use, with industrial, business, and commerce in the south and east sections surrounding the neighbourhood.

Bovaird House is an iconic 1850s history museum located on Bovaird Drive East. This Georgian-style farmhouse is notable for its exhibits, tours, and a small gift shop displaying local crafts. 

Knowledgeable guides provide historical accounts of the early settlers and farmers who established Brampton. They also bring the historic house to life with stories of the families who lived in the home centuries ago.

Admission to this antique house is free to the public.

Although this is a newer community, the surrounding neighbourhoods are well established. At intersecting Hurontario Street and Wanless Drive, you’ll find Bulk Barn and Food Basics for essentials shopping. Further south at Bovaird and McLaughlin Road, a Canadian Tire, Fortinos, and Walmart are conveniently located. A Sobey’s grocery store is close by at Hurontario and Mayfield.

Sandalwood Place on Sandalwood Parkway is anchored by an LCBO and features a physiotherapy clinic, Tim Hortons, TD Canada Trust, a dentist, a daycare, a pharmacy, Dollarama, and more.

The plethora of salons and spas located within this neighbourhood cater to busy parents looking for rest and relaxation. Pam’s Beauty Salon, The Elite Beauty, Best Esthetics & Beauty Salon, and Hanh Salon and Spa have all carved out a niche in this affluent neighbourhood.

Brampton’s culturally rich community is attracted to the diverse eateries in this region. King of Veggie is a unique vegetarian Indian restaurant, featuring Indian street food. 

A cluster of diverse cuisine can also be found at Mayfield Road and Hurontario Street, including Don’s Caribbean Jerk, featuring homestyle Caribbean cooking. Antica Osteria Italian Eatery is a rustic Italian restaurant serving traditional dishes. 

Just south of Antica, Guddu’s Chilli Chicken is a compact eatery in a shopping plaza, serving Hakka Chinese cuisine with lunchtime specials.

Chain restaurants like McDonald’s, Pizza Pizza, and Tim Hortons are just east along Hurontario Street.

Natural areas in the neighbourhood have fuelled the influx of families to it. Van Scott Parkette can accommodate soccer, football, lacrosse, and basketball, and also features a playground. 

Other green space in this community includes Burnt Elm Park, Ironblock Park, and Iceland Parkette.

Rotary Centennial Gardens is a landmark nestled within the neighbourhood. This picturesque natural area features flowering gardens and a defining gazebo. It’s a tranquil haven for an evening stroll.

Anytime Fitness at Hurontario and Wanless Drive is a convenient location for busy parents to enjoy squash courts, fitness classes like Zumba and yoga, and personalized fitness training.

The neighbourhood doesn’t have any large recreation centres within its boundaries as of yet. However, further north at Mayfield Road and Hurontario Street, the Snelgrove Community Centre offers a range of recreational programs in addition to meeting rooms for special occasions and community events.

This community is well connected to a surrounding network of highways. If you’re driving downtown, you can consider taking Sandalwood Parkway to Highway 410. You’ll reach downtown in about 35 minutes in moderate traffic.

If you’re commuting to downtown Toronto, Brampton Transit runs along Sandalwood Parkway, which will transport you to Mount Pleasant Village GO Station. From there, you’ll reach Union Station in about 50 minutes.

New home development continues to emerge in this neighbourhood, with pre-construction sales well underway. Although a newer neighbourhood, this community has the benefit of being surrounded by established amenities, a boon for day-to-day living.
