Neighbourhood Review
History
Downtown Ajax is based on a strong military history. The town was first developed in 1941 when Defence Industries Limited (D.I.L.) built a large munitions plant on what was then farmland. As the plant grew to become one of the largest in the British Empire, Ajax’s population soared.
Downtown Ajax has its roots in the 1950s, when the Ajax Shopping Centre, General Hospital and Community Centre were built, but the locals maintain a strong connection to their military past.
Architecture
Most residential homes in Downtown Ajax are newly built, with brick or vinyl exteriors. High-rise buildings offer a more modern appeal, with glass and concrete finishes, and often waterfront views.
