Fort York is a historic Toronto neighbourhood with military beginnings that are still evident today. The neighbourhood earns its name from the Fort York National Historic Site, which is a nineteenth-century military fortification within its borders. The Fort was originally built to defend Toronto Harbour. However, today, it is a tourist attraction that hosts all kinds of special events throughout the year, ranging from food festivals and farmers’ markets to concerts and historic exhibits. Outside of this 43-acre park, residents can enjoy all the benefits of downtown living. Given that Fort York is conveniently located in the city centre, bordering Bathurst Street to the east, Strachan Avenue to the west, and Lake Shore Boulevard to the south, it is a highly sought-after place to call home in Toronto. It also happens to be located near some of the most happening neighbourhoods in the city, like King West Village and West Queen West, giving residents access to all the shopping, dining, and nightlife that these areas have to offer. Having come a long way from its military origins, the Fort York of the 21st century is characterized by sleek and modern condominiums, townhouses, and lofts, which has attracted a population largely consisting of young professionals. Nearby attractions include Exhibition Place, Lake Ontario, and the Bentway, which transforms into an ice skating rink in the winter and a roller skating rink in the summer. Meanwhile, Fort York is a haven for transit, with several TTC bus and streetcar routes serving it, along with easy access to both the Gardiner Expressway and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, the latter of which is within walking distance.
