Both Air Canada and WestJet fly out of this airport, although flights are domestic. Something wonderful about New Waterford

New Waterford has a fascinating history as a coal mining town. In fact, the town first came to be due to the fact that it sits on coal deposits. Mining dates back to 1854, sparked by the Industrial Revolution and the new demand for coal. The Dominion Coal Company moved into New Waterford in 1907 and brought many Irish and Scottish Catholic workers with it. Thus, it is believed that the name New Waterford is a nod to the Irish city of Waterford due to the background of many of its earliest inhabitants. The coal industry continued to boom for many years. However, tragedy struck in 1917 when a colliery mine exploded in New Waterford, and 65 people were killed. This is the worst coal mining disaster to have ever happened on Cape Breton Island and a monument was later erected in honour of the lives lost.
