From its diverse population and strong economy to its highly-ranked food and entertainment scene, there are so many reasons to love Markham, Ontario. This charming suburb, which is also the largest city in York Region, is not only located close to the City of Toronto but features two historic main streets dating back to the 18th century, Main Street Unionville and Main Street Markham.
Markham is served by the York Region District School Board (the third largest school board in the province of Ontario) and the York Catholic District School Board. There are also several private schools in the sea, like Somerset Academy, Unionville College, and Yip’s Music and Montessori School. Lastly, Markham will soon be home to York University's Markham Campus, which has been in the works for quite some time and is finally set to open in spring 2024. As one of the top-ranked universities in Canada, the new addition of Yok’s Markham campus is sure to make the city even more desirable among local and international students alike.
Since 2006, Markham has officially comprised six communities, which are the largest in the city: Berczy Village, Cornell, Markham Village, Milliken, Thornhill, and Unionville.
Markham has two airports: Toronto Buttonville Municipal Airport and the private Toronto Markham Airport. However, Markham is only roughly 35 kilometres from two international airports, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport and the largest in Canada, Pearson International Airport. When it comes to public transit, Markham is connected to downtown Toronto and the rest of the Greater Toronto Area thanks to Metrolinx’s intraregional transit service, GO Transit. Within the City of Markham, York Region Transit (YRT) operates an extensive network of buses. As a Markham resident, you also have access to several of the province’s biggest highways, such as Highway 400, Highway 407, Highway 404, and Highway 427. Finally, in terms of healthcare, Markham is home to Markham Stouffville Hospital and a variety of other clinics, medical centres, and family practices.
If feeling safe in your community is a top priority, then look no further than Markham. Markham is consistently ranked as one of the safest cities, not just in Ontario but in all of Canada. The odds of experiencing or even witnessing a crime are far below the national average. In fact, as recently as 2023, Markham was ranked in the top ten safest cities in Canada.
Markham’s property market is thriving and shows no signs of slowing down. In Markham, buyers will find it all, from brand-new condos to townhomes, detached homes, bungalows, semi-detached homes, and more.
The standard of living in Markham is high. As a tech and life sciences hub, the area has an abundance of job opportunities, not to mention its close proximity to Toronto and central location within the Greater Toronto Area. It is also known for its top-quality healthcare, education, and infrastructure. But don’t take our word for it. As part of the Greater Toronto Area, Markham shares in Toronto’s honour of taking the ninth spot in The Global Liveability Index 2023’s Liveability Report.
Markham is home to the quaint and historic Main Street Unionville. Founded in 1794, Main Street Unionville is one of the most popular destinations in Markham. It is considered a heritage conservation district, which means much of the street still resembles the small town that was founded over two centuries ago. Main Street Unionville is home to several shops, pubs, restaurants, and historic homes, and hosts multiple festivals throughout the year, including the Unionville Festival and the Markham Jazz Festival.
