Immediately west of the city’s downtown core lies St. James Town. Adjacent to St. James Cemetary, this urban neighbourhood is situated within the boundaries of Sherbourne Street to the west, Parliament Street to the east, Wellesley Street to the south, and Bloor Street East to the north. It has long been known as the largest high-rise community in Canada, consisting of 19 high-rise buildings that all date back to the 1960s. Before that, it was a semi-suburban neighbourhood filled with Victorian homes, but now it is one of the most densely-populated neighbourhoods in the entire City of Toronto. With close proximity to Cabbagetown, Bloor Street, and Toronto’s east side, living in St. James Town is the height of convenience. While the southern part of the neighbourhood tends to be quieter and more residential, the northwest part of the area is livelier and more urban, with plenty of restaurants, shops, and businesses lining the streets. Everything you could possibly need can be found in or around St. James Town, from banks and dry cleaners to grocery stores, clothing shops, drug stores, and more. It also boasts excellent transit access, with many bus stops and two subway stops, Bloor-Yonge and Castle Frank, located nearby. Meanwhile, hopping into your car and onto the Don Valley Parkway couldn’t be easier and can be done in minutes. Other amenities that St. James Town residents can enjoy include the Toronto City Library on Parliament Street, the Rose Avenue Community Centre, and several parks, namely Wellesley Park, Craigleigh Gardens, and Riverdale Park (home to Riverdale Farm). If you’re interested in moving to St. James Town, keep an eye out for the area’s signature high-rise apartment buildings to have an opening.
