1. “The Cutest” House Boat
Listing address: 7 Brimley Rd #E-17, Toronto
Price: $149,000
Some homes have a dock. This Toronto home is tied to a dock. One of about a dozen house boats moored at the Bluffers Park Marina, the 320-square-foot aquatic home is on the market because the current owner is relocating outside of the country for work. “It is the cutest vessel I’ve ever seen or shown,” says listing agent Denise Doucet, who specializes in these types of deals.
“The house boat itself has been nicely updated,” she adds, noting upgrades including pot lights and new cabinetry. It’s also got comforts like a built-in queen-sized bed and air-conditioning and heating for potential year-round living on the water. Doucet especially expects the watercraft’s sticker price of $149,000 to turn heads in a housing market as super pricey as Toronto’s is. Like a condo, house-boat owners pay monthly fees for maintenance and access to amenities. In this case, though, the charges, known as mooring fees, go not to a condo board but to the marina. “For a cutie patootie house boat, you’re looking at just under $1,000 a month, all inclusive.”
2. A Quirky House With an Indoor Waterfall
Listing address: 888 Edgemere Rd., Fort Erie
Price: $1,299,000
Overlooking Lake Erie in Fort Erie, this roughly 2,800-square-foot contemporary abode is the opposite of a McMansion. With its master bedroom elevated on a platform that juts out above the rest of the home, it’s probably unlike anything you’ve come across on a residential Ontario Street. “It’s definitely one of the most unique ones I’ve ever seen,” says listing agent Dave Edward of the custom-built dwelling.
The home’s distinct layout isn’t for everyone. For some, the idea of tackling multiple sets of stairs to get to the master bedroom is likely off-putting. Nonetheless, Edward sees the home as having potential for young professionals, or perhaps a future Airbnb (it’s an obvious candidate for the short-term rental platform’s “unique stays” category). In addition to its surreal look, the home comes complete with an indoor pool and waterfall.
3. A Penthouse Fit for Barbie
Listing address: 166 Mountain Park Avenue, Unit #701, Hamilton
Price: $679,900
Barbie’s Dreamhouse is famously located in Malibu, Calif. — but if Mattel’s iconic fashion doll and cultural phenomenon were looking for a southern Ontario condo, well, this penthouse suite in Hamilton might do the trick.
The home may fit the Barbie aesthetic, but when it comes to scale, this condo is no doll house. It boasts about 1,100 square feet of colourful living space and a 700-square-foot private terrace.
4. 12 Acres of Off-the-Grid Land
Listing address: 0 North Lunenburg Rd., Lunenburg
Price: $319,000
Are you most at home in the Great Outdoors? This large parcel of rural Ontario land, equidistant from Montreal and Ottawa, might be for you. “Once you step foot on the property you forget your surroundings and it feels as though you are in your own private village,” writes listing agent Phillip Veilleux in an email to Wahi. “This property is definitely the most unique listing I’ve ever had,” he says of the 12-acre compound.
The land comes complete with a one-bedroom bunky and fully furnished camper. Everything is powered by solar panels, and there’s also an on-site greenhouse for growing your own fruit and veggies. “The sellers have actually lived there for over 10 years and the property is more than equipped for year-round use,” he explains.
5. Woodville Presbyterian Church
Listing address: 60 King St., Kawartha Lakes
Price: $1,149,800
The Woodville Presbyterian Church dates back to 1869, but the right buyer could breathe new life into the historic place of worship. The property is zoned for both residential and community uses and operates as a church and private residence today.
The original pews remain intact, one of the many charming features that add to the property’s character.
