Penticton, BC is a hidden gem of the BC Interior. Located just south of Kelowna, the city is bursting with charm, providing a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere to all who live there. Penticton is known for its many vineyards, craft breweries, apple and peach industry, as well as its thriving arts scene. Of course, given its location among the mountains and between two lakes, it is also the perfect spot for those who love the outdoors.
The Okanagan Skaha School District, or School District No. 67, is responsible for running a number of public elementary, middle, and secondary schools in Penticton and beyond. In fact, they operate a total of seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and three secondary schools in the area. Meanwhile, residents can enjoy quality post-secondary education in nearby Kelowna (roughly 1 hour by car), which is home to the University of British Columbia - Okanagan Campus and Okanagan College. If you are willing to venture farther from home, Vancouver boasts many top-rated universities and colleges, like the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, Capilano University, Vancouver Film School, the Art Institute of Vancouver, and the Emily Carr University of Art + Design. BC’s largest city is roughly four and a half hours by car from Penticton.
Penticton’s main neighbourhoods include Columbia Duncan, Uplands/Redlands, Carmi, Main South, Main North, and Wiltse/Valleyview.
South Okanagan-Similkameen Transit provides a fleet of buses with routes running throughout Penticton and to the surrounding areas. There is also a bus, operated by BC Transit, that runs from Penticton to Kelowna on a daily basis. As the largest city in the BC Interior, Kelowna is home to Kelowna International Airport, as well as a coach bus station that can transport passengers to Vancouver. Motorists can travel to Kelowna via Highway 97, or to Vancouver via Highway 94, 5, and the Trans Canada. When it comes to healthcare infrastructure, Penticton has its own hospital, the Penticton Regional Hospital. However, Kelowna General Hospital is also nearby.
The Penticton detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) maintains the security of the city. That said, crime is not a major issue in Penticton, and the odds of a natural disaster are relatively low. The main threat to the region is wildfires during the summer months. If needed, emergency services can be reached by calling 9-1-1.
Penticton is considered a hotspot for real estate investment, due to its affordability coupled with its fast-growing population. Penticton has property types to cater to all kinds of buyers. These properties range from apartments and bungalows to condos, semi-detached homes, detached homes, townhomes, and more.
Residents of Penticton enjoy a high standard of living. This is largely due to the area’s natural beauty coupled with its laid-back atmosphere and strong feeling of community. Some of the city’s top attractions include the Penticton Farmers’ Market, the area’s many wineries, including Poplar Grove Winery and Hillside Winery, and the outdoor activities that can be found here, including skiing at Apex Mountain Resort or swimming at Skaha Lake Park.
The word Penticton hails from the Okanagan language and has a few possible translations that all relate to one another. Three interpretations of the name Penticton include “a place to stay forever,” “a location where water flows beyond,” and “a permanent abode where water passes by.” Regardless of which translation you prefer, historians believe that the name refers to the fact that water flows all year between Okanagan Lake, through Penticton, and into Skaha Lake. Another fun fact? Did you know that Penticton is one of the only cities in the world to be situated between two lakes, another being Interlaken in Switzerland? It’s true! It’s no wonder that Skaha Lake and Okanagan Lake are two of the main attractions in Penticton. They are both popular spots for swimming, boating, paddling, and fishing in the summer months.
