Canadian Homebuyers Not Discouraged by Tariff Threats, Wahi Survey Finds

Trade tensions with the U.S. may dominate headlines, but they’re not discouraging most Canadian homebuyers.

TORONTO, ONT. —Aug 15, 2025 — A recent Wahi survey of 1,500 Canadians finds that among those who haven’t ruled out buying a home in the next two years, nearly 8 in 10 say U.S. tariffs aren’t influencing their plans. Just 16% are less likely to buy because of strained cross-border relations, while 4% say the trade situation makes them more likely to purchase.

The findings come as July marked the busiest month for GTA home sales since 2021. However, some tariff-sensitive markets reliant on steel and manufacturing — like Hamilton, Belleville, and Oshawa — are seeing year-over-year price declines.

Wahi Economist Ryan McLaughlin is available to provide further insights on how U.S. trade dynamics intersect with Canadian housing trends.
