Temperatures are dipping below zero across Canada, but real estate prices in some of the country’s premier winter wonderlands are thawing.

In fact, detached home prices in Canada’s popular ski destinations have risen nearly 4% through the first nine months of the year, according to Royal LePage’s latest Winter Recreational Property Report.

“Modest interest rate relief and a growing ‘Buy Canadian’ mindset helped reignite demand for slopeside chalets and mountain retreats,” explains Phil Soper, president and chief executive officer, Royal LePage, in the report. “While economic uncertainty continues to weigh on many urban markets, buyers seeking winter escapes are pushing ahead — demonstrating once again the resilience and enduring appeal of Canada’s recreational regions,” he adds.

With interest in winter retreats heating up and the mercury dropping, we scanned the Wahi listings for five stunning homes in Canadian winter wonderlands.

List price: $2,800,000

Here’s a house with history. Built in the early 1900s, this alpine-style home near the resort town of Canmore was floated along the Bow River from a Georgetown mining site, where it was constructed. Since then, it’s undergone a major transformation and brought into the 21st century — without losing its charm. The overhaul thoughtfully restored original components and also saw the home expanded. Take in striking summit views of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains from a third-storey deck or cozy up around the backyard fire pit or main floor’s stone fireplace. The home has a total of four bedrooms, plus a legal rental suite perched atop the garage.

Located at the Big White Ski Resort — known as one of the best ski resorts in Canada — this bespoke four-bedroom chalet is a true winter retreat. It boasts unobstructed views of the Monashee Mountains and immediate access to first-class slopes. It’s also the perfect place to hibernate, with a fully furnished games room and custom theatre.

Nestled in the community White Gold, just outside Whistler Village, this approximately 3,500-square-foot home melds modern style with mountain living.  The Scandinavian-style interior is bright and airy, though the property’s highlight is probably the expansive 1,200 square feet of deck space looking out onto a breathtaking mountainscape.

Hockey fanatics should love this stately 12,000-square-foot mansion. Game time is any time with an NHL-calibre rink right in your own backyard. Hockey nets, boards, and spectator seating are all included, and there’s even a fully equipped built-in dressing room. After taking to the ice or embarking on a brisk stroll through the property’s private forest, you can kick back and relax by the outdoor fire pit or head indoors and hunker down in the basement’s home theatre with seating for eight.

For those who prefer low-maintenance condo living, here’s a two-bedroom stacked townhouse unit in the Blue Mountains. Located on the top floor of a three-storey building, the home’s private deck overlooks a charming winterscape. Perhaps best of all: no shoveling necessary. That labour is covered by the modest monthly maintenance fees.
