Images of Canadian homes that resemble cottages
Canadian homes have appeared in numerous films and shows, from ‘90s cult classic “Mean Girls,” to current hit “Heated Rivalry.”

Canada has produced more than its fair share of movie-and-television stars. Jim Carrey, Ryan Reynolds, Michael J. Fox, Keanu Reeves, Ryan Gosling, Seth Rogan, Mike Myers, John Candy, William Shatner — the list goes on and on. These aren’t the only Canadian exports to get considerable screen time, though. Not to be upstaged, Canadian homes have also figured prominently in Hollywood productions and TV shows alike.

Here are 10 famous Canadian homes from the silver screen (and smaller screens).

1. 1. 93 Salisbury Ave., Cambridge from “The Queen’s Gambit”

Cambridge plays the part of mid-century Kentucky in “The Queen’s Gambit,” an award-winning adaptation of Walter Tevis’s 1983 novel about a troubled chess prodigy. The Chamberlain Estate, a sprawling Tudor-Revival residence built in 1916 (and where Beth attends a house party), is just one of several Canadian properties to make an appearance in the drama, which was also shot in Toronto as well as Berlin.

2. Beth’s house in “The Queen’s Gambit” (15 Brant Rd., Cambridge)

Just around the corner from Cambridge’s Chamberlain estate stands the humble 15 Brant Rd., which played the role of Beth’s house in “The Queen’s Gambit” — though you may not recognize it. In the series, the cozy house is a striking blue, but it was returned to its original white after filming ended.

3. Regina George’s palatial pad in “Mean Girls” (11 High Point Rd., Toronto)

Seen “Mean Girls”? If so, you may remember 11 High Point Rd. It portrayed the home of Regina George, the movie’s antagonist played by Ontario’s own Rachel McAdams. The home steals the spotlight when Regina shows off her digs to new friend Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) who comments, “Wow. Your house is really nice.” Regina’s response? “I know, right?” We agree.

4. The Putnam House in the “Handmaid’s Tale” (25 Park Lane Circ.)

A home at 25 Park Lane Circ., in Toronto’s illustrious Bridle Path neighbourhood, was shown in three episodes of the first season of the “Handmaid’s Tale.”

5. Archie’s yellow “Riverdale” house (2037 E. 3rd Ave., Vancouver)

Fans of “Riverdale,” the seven-season series based on the Archie Comics, should recognize this cheery yellow-painted house in East Vancouver as the home of none other than Archie Andrews. The character home, situated in the tree-lined neighbourhood of
Grandview-Woodland, dates back to 1912, and when it appeared on the market in 2022, it had been upgraded to include a legal one-bedroom suite.

6. Edward Cullen’s “Twilight” home

Over in West Vancouver, Edward Cullen’s modernist home from the “Twilight” saga popped up for rent a few years ago.

7. The Rose Family mansion from “ Schitt’s Creek” (30 Fifeshire Rd., Toronto)

Before the Rose family lost everything and had to relocate to Schitt’s Creek, they lived it up in a pseudo French château. The sprawling 24,000-square-foot, 12-bedroom mansion at 30 Fifeshire Rd., in Toronto’s York Mills neighbourhood, is perfect for the role of displaying ostentatious wealth in the Emmy-winning production. It features two pools (indoors and out), a full built-in eight-seat home theatre, wellness spa, billiards room, private library, and more. “Schitt’s Creek” isn’t the home’s only TV appearance. It also appeared in two episodes of the first (and to date only) season of Amazon Prime’s Luxe Listings Toronto.

8. The Portokalos family home in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” (73 Glenwood Cres., Toronto)

living room

Gone is the giant Greek flag painted on the garage door, but in more recent photos, 73 Glenwood Cres. is unmistakably the home from the 2002 surprise box-office hit “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” With its low-pitched gable and columns, the abode maintains a distinctly Athenian flavour despite being located in a sleepy corner of east Toronto. It’s easy to see why this property would’ve appealed to location scouts.

9. The “Cheaper by the Dozen 2” Cottage (2884 Fire Route 47, Lakefield)

@torontolife This Stoney Lake cottage was famously the set of the Steve Martin–Eugene Levy family-comedy romp Cheaper by the Dozen 2. It's since been renovated, and the estate—listed for $8.6 million—comes with a log-cabin frame, a two-storey boathouse and more than 200 metres of shoreline. Muskoka, Ontario’s cottage country, has attracted celebrities including Stephen Spielberg and Tom Hanks. Beyond being a vacation destination for A-listers, Muskoka has served as a film set, too. In particular, this 8,000-square-foot cottage on Stoney Lake was featured in the 2005 movie “Cheaper by the Dozen 2,” starring Steve Martin and Eugene Levy.

10. The Barlochan Cottage from “Heated Rivalry”

Fresh off an appearance in the finale of the first season of the Crave hit series “Heated Rivalry,” this Muskoka cottage has been generating lots of buzz.
