Spring Renewal

With the first day of spring just around the corner, now’s the time to start thinking about your spring maintenance to-do list. Whether you’re getting ready to sell your home or you simply want to get ahead of spring cleanup, here are some steps you can take now to ensure your home is ready for the warmer months.
1. Check your roof
Spring is the ideal time to have your roof inspected to address any damage that may have been caused by any heavy snow or ice that accumulated over the winter months. If you’ve noticed water stains on your ceilings or walls, that could be a sign that your roof may have leaks.
Spring and fall are the best times to make any repairs as the weather is warmer and the days are long.
2. Clean eavestroughs and gutters
Spring is also one of the best times of year to clean your gutters and eavestroughs. This helps to ensure proper water flow during rainy seasons and prevents potential damage from built-up debris over winter.
3. Protect your basement from water
Snowmelt can increase moisture and potentially flood your basement, which is why it’s critical to ensure your basement is protected from water. A basement is more susceptible to leaks and flooding because it’s the lowest part of a home. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, a basement flood can cost homeowners an average of $43,000, which is why it’s important to waterproof your basement to protect it from the elements.
4. Check your air conditioner
The warm weather can come on suddenly. One day it’s 12 degrees and the next it’s 28, which is why it’s important to ensure your A/C is in good condition. Start with inspecting the unit to ensure that there’s no damage from winter weather. Next, clear away any debris around the unit to ensure the airflow isn’t restricted. And, finally, change the air filter to optimize the unit’s efficiency.
5. Prepare your outdoor space
Spring cleanup applies just as much to your yard as it does to your house. For homeowners with a lawn, professional contractor and TV host Mike Holmes recommends tuning their lawn mower by changing the oil, air filter and spark plug, and sharpening or replacing its blade. Removing dead foliage is also important as debris can lead to mould, disease and decay. And to keep your lawn looking healthy, Homes suggests aerating it which will loosen compacted soil so that water, air, and nutrients can reach the roots.
