Background

Jared has only had one boss for the last 10 years, himself, and boy does that guy have high expectations. Within his first year of launching a freelance career Jared was already publishing regularly in Canada’s top three newspapers, the Toronto Star, the Globe & Mail, and the National Post. Within three years, Jared had added some top-tier American and international publishers to his roster, including Fortune Magazine, TIME, the Guardian, Rolling Stone, and Fast Company. While he continues to contribute to most of these publications to this day, and others, he’s also branched out into other areas of interest, like public speaking, and more recently co-authoring his first book.

Prior to launching his freelance career in 2014, Jared spent a year at a media production startup called The Mark News, following a six-week internship at the National Post. Jared got his first taste of journalism volunteering for the school newspaper at his alma mater, Western University’s the Gazette, where he later served as news editor.

Education

Jared earned a Bachelor of Arts honours degree in media studies and a minor in creative writing, as well as a Master of Arts in journalism degree from Western University.Achievements

Jared’s greatest professional achievement is his ability to not just survive but thrive as a freelance journalist, a career path not for the faint of heart. A close second is having his first book published by Harvard Business Review Press.

Coolest gig

Jared spent a week camping out in the Sahara Desert, reporting on an all-female off-road automotive rally through Morocco.

What Jared Covers

Jared has covered just about every top under the sun in his decade as a freelance journalist, from music to sports to politics to personal finance, but his primary areas of focus are technology, entrepreneurship, real estate, and the future of work.

What Jared Loves About His Job

There is no aspect of this career Jared doesn’t enjoy, but most of all he loves the freedom and flexibility that comes with being a freelancer, and that he gets to spend his time doing his two favourite things: writing and speaking to interesting people about interesting topics. The news business hasn’t been kind to most over the last decade, and he doesn’t take for granted being one of the few that has little to complain about.

If Jared didn’t Have This Job

He’d be hosting a talk show and/or podcast.

When He’s Not Working

Jared is playing hockey, watching hockey or basketball, exercising, travelling, or bingeing TV with his partner.
