Known affectionately among Torontonians as Roncy, Roncesvalles has quickly become one of the most popular neighbourhoods on the city’s west side. This historically Polish community is extremely unique, boasting tons of greenery, in part due to its ideal location adjacent to High Park (be sure to check out the cherry blossoms in High Park each spring). Walk along Roncesvalles Avenue and you’ll find everything from top-rated coffee shops and bakeries to bars, pubs, independent boutiques, butcher shops, and more. In essence, Roncy is a true Toronto community, with everything you could possibly need in this little enclave north of Liberty Village. It also happens to be less than 15 minutes by car from downtown Toronto and easily accessible thanks to Line 2 of the subway, along with several buses and streetcars. In terms of housing, as the community has grown in popularity and size, so too have the housing options. Now, residents have the choice of living in century-old brick homes with welcoming front porches or low-rise condos and apartment buildings. It’s no wonder the population of Roncy is so diverse - there is a property type for everyone. Some of the main neighbourhoods that make up Roncesvalles include its namesake, Roncesvalles, as well as Parkdale and High Park-Swansea. As mentioned, the population used to be predominantly Polish, which is why you will find so many Polish restaurants and delicatessens in the area, in addition to the Annual Polish Festival, held each September. For families moving into the area, there are several public and private schools, including two French-language schools located in Roncy. Overall, if you’re looking for a Toronto neighbourhood that seamlessly blends the old with the new, Roncesvalles should definitely be on your list. Fun fact: Roncesvalles Avenue was named by Colonel Walter O’Hara, a prominent member of the British Army in the 19th century, for the Battle of Roncesvalles, which occurred in Spain’s Roncesvalles Pass in 1813. O’Hara fought in this battle and won against Napoleon’s army.
