West Vancouver is one of the most sought-after places to live in Vancouver for a reason. It is community-oriented, family-friendly, a stone’s throw away from downtown Vancouver (you can get from West Vancouver to the downtown core in less than 20 minutes), and has all sorts of educational and economic opportunities. Plus, there are all kinds of recreational activities that locals can take advantage of here, like skiing, boating, and hiking.
The West Vancouver School District, also known as British Columbia School District No. 45, serves the municipality of West Vancouver, along with the neighbouring nation and villages of Bowen Island, the Squamish Nation, and Lions Bay. More specifically, the West Vancouver School District operates 14 elementary schools and three secondary schools, giving residents lots of institutions to choose from. Meanwhile, when it comes time for post-secondary school, West Vancouver students won’t have to go far, with so many world-renowned universities and colleges located in the Metro Vancouver Area. These include the top-ranked University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, Capilano University, Vancouver Film School, the Art Institute of Vancouver, and the Emily Carr University of Art + Design.
Some of the main neighbourhoods that make up West Vancouver include Westmount, Sentinel Hill, Horseshoe Bay, Eagle Harbour, Whytecliff, Cedardale, Gleneagles, Ambleside, Dundarave, Altamont, and Bayridfge.
The municipality of West Vancouver is well-served by TransLink, Metro Vancouver’s very own public transportation system. There are a number of bus routes in the area. However, there is currently no SkyTrain route that runs through West Vancouver. That said, Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal is nearby, which gives residents access to the routes offered by BC Ferries, connecting locals with Nanaimo, the Sunshine Coast, and beyond. West Vancouver is also conveniently located off of the Sea-to-Sky Highway, which means easy access to Squamish, Whistler, Pemberton, and more. This is ideal for those who love hiking and camping in the summer or skiing and snowboarding in the winter. Meanwhile, West Vancouver residents can take advantage of the other infrastructure available in Vancouver, like Vancouver International Airport in Richmond and a Via Rail train stop. Lastly, when it comes to healthcare, West Vancouver residents are in good hands. There are a multitude of healthcare clinics, as well as Lions Gate Hospital right in the municipality. Further, once you cross the Lions Gate Bridge, you will have access to Mount Saint Joseph Hospital, St. Paul’s Hospital, and Vancouver General Hospital, among others.
West Vancouver is kept safe via its very own police department, the West Vancouver Police Department. You should always call 9-1-1 in case of emergency.
The West Vancouver housing market continues to thrive. The area has been in high demand for quite some time, which means that living here won’t come cheap. However, given this high demand, the area has grown considerably over the years and now features a wide range of property types. Those looking to move into the area will have several options ranging from bungalows and detached homes to semi-detached homes, townhouses, condos, and apartments.
The standard of living in West Vancouver is among the highest in British Columbia. This prestigious community has it all - a bustling economy, family-friendly amenities, a booming housing market, top-notch infrastructure, and easy access to nature and the many recreational activities that come with that. It’s no wonder the City of Vancouver as a whole was named one of the most liveable in the world. Specifically, The Global Liveability Index’s 2023 Liveability Report ranked Vancouver as the fifth most liveable city in the world, considering categories like stability, healthcare, culture & environment, and education.
It probably won’t come as a surprise that West Vancouver features an abundance of green space. The municipality is home to Cypress Provincial Park, which offers alpine and cross-country skiing in the winter and plenty of hiking in the summer. Whytecliff Park and Lighthouse Park can also be found in West Vancouver. Meanwhile, Grouse Mountain, featuring the ever-popular Grouse Grind Hike, and Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, are also located nearby, situated along the border of West Vancouver and North Vancouver.
