Toronto

In the 1600s, Toronto was the site of an alliance between the Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee, two Indigenous groups. In the 1700s, the area was developed as a strategic naval and garrison base to protect British settlements from incursions related to the American Revolutionary War. The city thrived in the 1800s as a major railway hub and later tapped into Niagara Fall’s hydroelectric energy in the 1900s. This helped spur Toronto’s rapid economic growth, eventually turning it into Canada’s economic hub.

The megacity’s downtown core is located by the harbour on the shoreline of Lake Ontario. Toronto’s north-south axis is Yonge Street, which starts at Lake Ontario and leads to Georgian Bay. Toronto is divided into several neighbourhoods and boroughs. Old Toronto covers part of the downtown core and areas on the east side of the Don Valley River. There are suburbs to the north of the downtown core and an industrial area near the shoreline of Lake Ontario

The Royal Ontario Museum is one of North America’s largest museums. Additionally, the Art Gallery of Ontario has a large Canadian collection, as well as European masterworks. The Toronto Eaton Centre is North America’s busiest shopping mall, and there are unique boutiques and clothing stores on Queen Street West. The city is well-known for its diverse dining options. The Danforth neighbourhood is famous for Greek food, and you can find Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and Korean restaurants in Chinatown.

High Park is one of the city’s best-known natural areas. It’s a sprawling park with hiking trails, a zoo, and sports fields. Exhibition Place is Toronto’s largest convention and sports centre. It’s the location of the annual Canadian National Exhibition where you can enjoy carnival rides, music concerts, and watch the Canadian International Air Show. East of here is the Scotiabank Arena, which hosts concerts as well as professional basketball and hockey games.

The Toronto Transit Commission operates buses, subways, and paratransit services throughout the city. The Yonge-University subway line connects people from the southern Union Station to Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and Finch Station to the north. The Bloor-Danforth line runs east and west, from Kipling to Kennedy Station. Toronto is connected to neighbouring cities by the GO transit system, which also has buses and trains.
