Ontario’s real estate market has attracted a who’s who of famous homebuyers, both domestic and international, including Drake.

It may not be sunny California, home to North America’s entertainment industry, or New York City, the continent’s financial centre, but Ontario’s real estate market continues to attract the rich and famous. Below are 15 celebrities who own homes in Canada’s most populous province.

1. Hollywood Star Tom Hanks owns a cottage on Lake Muskoka, according to Forbes.

2. Director Steven Spielberg is said to own a cottage in the Muskokas, also per the Forbes report.

4. Oscar nominee Kate Hudson owns a Muskoka vacation property, too, as did her mother. See why the star-studded area has earned a reputation as the Hamptons of the North?

6. Deadmau5 has a mansion on a 200-acre plot of land, near Campbellville, Ont. The Grammy-nominated DJ and producer, born Joel Zimmerman, previously sold his downtown Toronto penthouse in 2015 for a cool $2.5 million (we can only assume it was because of noise complaints).

7. Last year, Sir Elton John purchased a penthouse at King Toronto, a condo development under construction in Toronto’s Entertainment District. Back in 2009, Elton John and Toronto-born partner David Furnish were rumoured to own a large estate in Caledon, Ont. His new digs hit different:

8. Oscar-winning Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, behind such films as the mermaid tale the Shape of Water, fittingly has property in Toronto’s Leslieville neighbourhood, near the Beach.

9. Canadian best-selling (and critically acclaimed) novelist and poet Margaret Atwood has long been a resident of Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood, ruffling a few feathers at times by opposing housing development in her community. (For a time, The Handmaid’s Tale author also had a stake in a triplex near Trinity Bellwoods.)

10. Always repping the 6ix, Drake unveiled his Beaux Arts-inspired Toronto manor, named The Embassy, in 2020. Located within the ultra-posh Bridle Path enclave — which has also been home to the late Prince, Gordon Lightfoot, and numerous other celebs — it appears the home will no longer be his primary residence. He recently purchased a house in Houston — though he has no plans to sell his Toronto pad.

11. Like Atwood, starlet Rachel McAdams of Mean Girls fame is a fellow Annex resident.

12, 13, and 14. At least three of the Toronto Maple Leafs Core Four (as well as several other notable NHLers) have put down roots in Toronto. Team captain John Tavares, as well as star centre Auston Matthews and right winger Mitch Marner are all Toronto homeowners. It’s unclear whether Calgary-born Swedish national William Nylander can say the same.

15. Justin and Hailey Beiber are primarily based in Beverly Hills, where they bought a mammoth $25 million abode in August 2021. But the couple reportedly also owns a 9,000-square-foot mansion backing onto Puslinch Lake, not far from Cambridge, which had a price tag of $5 million in 2018.
