Just north of the Distillery District lies a small enclave known as Corktown. This historic residential neighbourhood is bound by the Don River to the east, Parliament Street to the west, Queen Street East to the north, and the Gardiner Expressway to the south. Located less than 10 minutes by car from downtown Toronto, Corktown is one of the most up-and-coming areas on Toronto’s east end. Despite its central location, Corktown is known for being a quieter part of the city, which makes it ideal for people of all ages, from families and seniors to older young professionals. It also happens to be less expensive than many other neighbourhoods in Toronto, although that may change in the coming years given the many revitalization projects that are underway. Like Regent Park, Corktown is quickly gentrifying and is slated to become the new Cabbagetown. Currently, it features a mix of row houses and industrial buildings that have been transformed into lofts, condos, and apartments. There is plenty of green space in Corktown, like Orphan’s Green, which features a children’s playground and an off-leash dog park, as well as Corktown Commons, which holds outdoor movie nights during the summer, and Underpass Park, where the Underpass Park Farmers’ Market is held each Thursday night. Other nearby attractions include St. Lawrence Market, which is only a short walk west on Front Street, and the Distillery District, which is immediately south of Corktown.
