Description
A fine old-style Cape Breton farm, with house and barn. There are 26 acres of mainly level fields, the rest is wooded. This is a huge property: about 1500 ft wide and 1.2 miles front to back. Shorefront on the Bras d’Or lake is 475 feet wide. The property is divided by the Portage Road, making lots of frontage on that road, together with around the same amount beside the MacInnes Island Road which one section of the property boundary. The land beside the shore is level and cleared, and there is a road along it. At the back of the cleared portion is a beautiful deep spring-fed pond. A big feature of the land is that there is a road running way back to the rear of the property. This is generally lacking with large acreages and expensive to instal from scratch. The house is old and large and comfortable. It needs attention for sure, but was lived in year round until recently. The entry is into the kitchen area, then on into the dining and sitting rooms, then another room used as a ground floor bedroom. Upstairs are five more bedrooms. Due to gypsum underlying the ground - a feature of this area, among others - in the past water has been collected from the roof and stored in a concrete cistern. See the eavestrough piping here (not connected currently, but the connecting pipe is stored behind the house) and the concrete cistern near the house. Treatment systems are available. From the farm it’s 9 miles to Whcocomagh on exellent paved roads, under 15 minutes. Whycocomagh has shops and restaurants and many other services, it is the centre for a large area. Situated on the Trans Canada Highway it provides fast travel by road to Sydney (1.5 hours) and Halifax (3 hours) and their international airports. For the boater, fisher, kayaker, the magnificent Bras d’Or lake system is a paradise, thousands of miles of waterfront, islands… and access to the Atlantic Ocean. Baddeck, Port Hawkesbury and all of the west coast of Inverness County are easy drives.
