There are so many wonderful reasons to live in Langford. First, it’s less than 20 minutes by car from downtown Victoria, which gives residents easy access to the urban amenities that Victoria offers. That said, Langford is far enough away that it offers a quieter, more laidback lifestyle, which many locals prefer. Plus, it has a lower crime rate, it’s more affordable, and it’s in a prime location that makes it easy to get to the airport and ferry terminal, or up-island to Nanaimo, Parksville, Tofino, and more. Langford also happens to be surrounded by natural beauty, with Goldstream Provincial Park, Thetis Lake Regional Park, Metchosin, and Sooke all nearby.
Despite the fact that Langford is part of Greater Victoria, it is the Sooke School District, BC School District No. 62, that is responsible for operating schools in Langford. The Sooke School District also operates public schools in Metchosin, Port Renfrew, Colwood, and the Highlands. Belmont Secondary is Langford’s local high school. However, it also has a middle school and four elementary schools, as well as numerous private institutions, like Lighthouse Christian Academy, and Brookes Westshore. Residents will also have easy access to several top-notch post-secondary options thanks to the city’s proximity to Victoria. Victoria is home to the University of Victoria. However, there are several other options too, such as Camosun College, Royal Roads University, Vancouver Island School of Art, and Pearson College UWC.
The main neighbourhoods that make up Langford are Downtown Langford, Bear Mountain, Happy Valley, Thetis Heights, South Skirt Mountain, and Westhills.
BC Transit operates a variety of bus routes to and from Langford. These routes can take passengers from Langford to Downtown Victoria, the airport and ferry terminal, Sooke, and beyond. Speaking of the airport and ferry terminal, Langford is only 30 minutes by car from Victoria International Airport and Victoria’s Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal, the latter of which provides easy access to the Mainland and Gulf Islands. There are also a number of coach bus services that operate on Vancouver Island, like the Island Link Bus and Vancouver Island Connector. Through them, residents can travel to Parksville, Tofino, Nanaimo, Campbell River, and more. In terms of healthcare, Langford is home to the Westshore Urgent Primary Care Centre. However, you will also have easy access to Victoria’s many hospitals, like the Royal Jubilee Hospital and Victoria General Hospital.
The West Shore detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) monitors the safety and security of Langford. However, Langford is known for being a family-friendly city, and part of that is due to its low crime rate. There are a range of new housing developments in the area, as well as commercial developments, featuring all kinds of big-box stores. In essence, Langford is quickly becoming a community that has everything you could possibly need. Today, the area is home to Westshore Town Centre, a number of parks, including City Centre Park, several golf courses on nearby Bear Mountain, Starlight Stadium (home of Rugby Canada), and a weekly farmers’ market.
