The name Joseph Bloore may sound familiar. The entrepreneur who Bloor Street was named after, along with another of Toronto\u2019s pre-eminent builders William Botsford Jarvis, started developing the area now known as Yorkville<\/a> into a residential district in the 1840s. It worked out well for them, as the community enjoyed all the spoils that accompany rapid growth. <\/p>

Yorkville was connected by an omnibus service in 1849, incorporated into a village in 1853, and became the first village to be annexed by the City of Toronto<\/a> in 1883. <\/p>

The construction of the Bloor-Danforth subway line in 1966, and the approval of higher density accommodations, would send real estate<\/a> values to the moon and inevitably reshape Yorkville forever. The history of Yorkville can be experienced through the area\u2019s architectural variety. Each house, highrise, and retail establishment offers visitors a little slice of the area\u2019s storied past. <\/p>

The Victorian-style homes of the area are holdovers from the neighbourhood\u2019s earliest days. Many of them were built between 1870 and 1895 and feature cast iron fences, expertly manicured gardens, and ornamental brickwork. A number of them are official heritage properties. <\/p>

Yorkville enjoys a rich cultural history that\u2019s sustained these days by a variety of art galleries, museums, and culinary experiences. <\/p>

The 1960s were particularly fruitful. At that time, Yorkville was hailed as Toronto\u2019s bohemian epicentre, with hippie-culture heroes like Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, and Gordon Lightfoot all calling the area home at one time. <\/p>
