Welcome to historic Bowmanville<\/a>. European settlers came to this area in the late 1700s. Among these were three loyalist families: The Trulls, the Conants, and the Burks. These families cleared land and established businesses, such as taverns and sawmills, the latter of which made use of Bowmanville<\/a> Creek. In the coming years, more settlers harnessed the waterpower of the creek and soon there were three more mills erected in the vicinity. By the mid-1800s, Bowmanville was known for its flourishing industry. Bowmanville has a rich variety of housing options, from single, detached homes to apartment buildings and townhouses. There is also a significant portion of households that are rented yearly. Many of Bowmanville\u2019s homes were built pre-1960, but nearly one-third of them were constructed after 2000.<\/p>

The town preserves its heritage buildings meticulously, which you\u2019ll notice walking around downtown. These commercial buildings, such as the two-and-a-half-story, brick commercial building on King Street, represent the town\u2019s commercial past and date back to the late 1800s. Cultural heritage is part of Bowmanville\u2019s DNA. The town is home to the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington<\/a> (VAC), which is the greater municipality that Bowmanville belongs to. The VAC, located on Simpson Avenue, \u201cnurtures the cultural development\u201d of the community. It hosts classes and art exhibitions and is supported by both corporate and government funding.
