<\/at-text>Steven Southgate has been in the interior design business since 1996, spending 20 years in lifestyle television and joining Terry Edward Briceland\u2019s TEB Interiors Inc. in Toronto<\/a> last summer as Master of Interiors.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI think a home needs emotion, caring, memories, thoughts and heart,\u201d he says. \u201cYou don’t need to have all the high-end furniture or all the right pieces of art. My living\/dining room space in my one-bedroom 640-square-foot apartment in Toronto.<\/p>\n

What was the inspiration behind creating the room?<\/h2>\n

My previous style was mid-century Mad Men. I decided to change my space entirely mid-pandemic. I had been working on an HGTV Canada show, Scott\u2019s Vacation House Rules. Seeing all the bright, open cottage spaces with light furniture and welcoming textures inspired me. I wanted\u00a0comfort and a soft space\u00a0to lean into.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What were the challenges in creating the room and how did you overcome them?<\/h2>\n

Almost everything I owned needed to be sold, given away or changed. This was particularly challenging because we were in the middle of a global pandemic. My new mantra is\u00a0\u201cEverything old is new again.” I had my vintage dining chairs\u00a0reupholstered, took what\u00a0was once my\u00a0television stand\u00a0and transformed it\u00a0into a banquette seat in my dining room. I painted pieces\u00a0and changed the top on my coffee table. I reframed art and\u00a0objects that I loved.\u00a0<\/p>\n
