Respondents to Wahi\u2019s Rate Outlook Panel are asked whether they anticipate a rate cut \u2014 and, if so, by how much \u2014 as well as the reasoning behind their decision.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Bank will hold rates steady this time,\u201d says Peter Norman, vice president and economic strategist at Altus Group. \u201cThere remains a balance of risk, including the lingering uncertainties over the continuing impacts from trade tensions, but recent economic data has been showing a modest strengthening.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Penelope Graham, mortgage expert and director of content at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ratehub.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ratehub.ca<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is on the same page. \u201cThe latest data reports have given the Bank all the rationale it needs to assume a holding pattern,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graham and Norman point not just to the labour market but also recent growth in the economy as a reason to maintain the current overnight rate of 2.25%. Canadian GDP increased by 2.6% in the third quarter of the year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/en\/economics\/canadian-analysis\/data-flashes\/canadian-gdp-jumped-2-6-in-q3-although-details-are-mixed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surprising market-watchers<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Bank of Canada typically uses rate cuts to stimulate a sluggish economy \u2014 lower borrowing costs encourage economic activity such as spending and hiring \u2014 so a positive GDP reading tends to reduce the likelihood of lower rates.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>RBC Assistant Chief Economist Robert Hogue points to the wording of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankofcanada.ca\/2025\/10\/fad-press-release-2025-10-29\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bank\u2019s last rate announcement<\/a> earlier in the fall, when it trimmed rates by 25 basis points: \u201cThe October cut was accompanied by clear conditional pause language that made another cut unlikely at subsequent meetings,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hogue also suggests that there is the potential for the BoC to move in the opposite direction with rate hikes in the second half of 2026: \u201cWe expect no further cuts from the BoC this cycle.\u201d<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_code _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; But given current economic conditions, he suggests, there is no need for the BoC to rush. Rather, it can wait and see whether any clouds appear on the horizon. \u201cIt&#8217;s clear the central bank doesn&#8217;t need to add any stimulus to the economy at the moment,\u201d says Lander.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInflation remains in the upper half of the Bank of Canada\u2019s target range, GDP growth was positive in Q3 avoiding a technical recession, and the November jobs report showed a steep drop in the unemployment rate,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most of the year, the Canadian unemployment rate has been edging higher, but it has recently begun declining. In November, unemployment fell to 6.5%, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/daily-quotidien\/251205\/cg-a002-eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">down 0.4 percentage points<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the previous month, according to Statistics Canada. Meanwhile, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/daily-quotidien\/251117\/dq251117a-eng.htm?indid=3665-1&amp;indgeo=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadian inflation clocked in a 2.2%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on an annual basis in October.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark Fieder, president of Avison Young Canada, suggests it may be some time before we see another rate cut. \u201c[The] general consensus is that the Bank of Canada will hold the overnight rate this week, and I anticipate they will pause for the longer term \u2013 barring any developments warranting a cut,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the broader economy may not necessitate a cut, he adds that the commercial real estate market would welcome a boost. \u201cLowering interest rates would be preferred for commercial real estate, stimulating investment opportunities for those who have been on the sidelines as well as those who have already been actively investing in sectors like multifamily, industrial, and retail,\u201d he says. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, Pauline Lierman, vice president of market research at Zonda Urban, anticipates a hold but says the Canadian housing market could certainly use more relief.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis [rate hold] will not be great news to the ears of the real estate industry, especially in Ontario, which would gladly take an inch of additional affordability despite the bank rate being more of negligible impact on the market at present,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>The last time <a href=\"https:\/\/wahi.com\/ca\/en\/learning-centre\/real-estate-101\/buy\/july-2025-canadian-interest-rate-forecast\/\">Wahi\u2019s Rate Outlook Panel was unanimous<\/a> in its prediction was this July, when panelists correctly predicted the BoC would hold rates at 2.75%. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_code _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243;
