Nearly <\/span>two-in-five Canadians<\/span><\/a> believe haunted houses are real, according to a 2023 survey by pollsters Research Co.<\/span> <\/p>\n <\/span> Most \u2014 but not all \u2014 of the signs that people commonly report of a haunting are in some way related to one or more of our five senses, suggests Morgan Knudsen, the Edmonton-based co-founder of <\/span>Entityseeker Paranormal Research & Investigations<\/span><\/a> and co-host of the podcast <\/span>Supernatural Circumstances<\/span><\/a>. \u201cWe rely on our physical senses to translate our environment,\u201d she tells Wahi.\u00a0 <\/span> <\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n 2. You hear strange sounds.<\/strong> Things that go bump in the night \u2014 that is, unexplainable sounds \u2014 are another common sign reported by people who believe their home is haunted. \u201cThere\u2019s audible phenomena, like hearing voices or bangs that they (the homeowner) can\u2019t explain,\u201d Evans tells Wahi.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 3. You notice smells you can’t quite place.<\/strong> Evans suggests people can sometimes sniff out paranormal activity \u2014 literally. \u201cSometimes we get weird smells, like perfume or tobacco, as an example, that doesn\u2019t coincide with anyone in the home,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 4. Unplug everything. <\/strong>Sometimes technology haunts us \u2014 and not just when old photos or social media posts surface on the internet. During one investigation, Evans discovered that the voices a homeowner swore they could hear were in fact coming from their WiFi security camera. <\/span>The very nature of the paranormal \u2014 \u201cthe idea of paranormal essentially means abnormal: it\u2019s out of the norm,\u201d Knudsen points out \u2014 also poses challenges. \u201cThere\u2019s no such thing as a ghost meter,\u201d she says. <\/span><\/span>However, when dealing with the suspected supernatural, there are several practical steps that homeowners can take. Here are five ways to respond if you think your house is haunted:<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Not only that, but if you\u2019re panicking you may overlook logical explanations for what\u2019s happening in your home.\u00a0 \u201cA lot of people they\u2019ll get themselves so hyped up that something\u2019s wrong that every single thing in their house \u2014 even the explainable stuff \u2014 becomes odd, and strange, and scary.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
<\/span>
<\/span>Infrasounds are sound waves with frequencies under 20 Hertz. <\/span>Some research suggests<\/span><\/a> that exposure to these low-frequency sounds \u2014 which are inaudible to the average human ear \u2014 can affect your vision. \u201cYou can actually start to see weird things out of the corner of your eye, really weird stuff like that,\u201d says Knudsen.<\/span>

<\/span>On investigations, Evans brings an EMF (electromagnetic field) meter, which measures electromagnetic fields. \u201cA sudden, unexplained spike in EMF readings is often considered evidence of a potential paranormal presence by ghost hunters,\u201d <\/span>writes Marina Antoniou<\/span><\/a>, associate professor in the School of Engineering at the University of Warwick, in a release. However, EMF detectors can also discover wiring problems in your home and other issues that could be confused for paranormal signs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>She suggests checking out the <\/span>Psi Encyclopedia<\/span><\/a>, which is an online resource published by the U.K.\u2019s Society for Psychical Research. \u201cIt\u2019s updated constantly, and it will not steer you wrong,\u201d she says.
